Widening and Deck Replacement Planned for U.S. Route 61 Bridge
Southbound U.S. Route 61 Bridge over Big Creek in Lincoln County
HANNIBAL – The southbound U.S. Route 61 bridge over Big Creek at the Lincoln and St. Charles County line will be widened and have a deck replacement this summer. Construction will begin on Monday, June 19, and the majority of the work will occur overnight.

The bridge replacement project was recently awarded to Millstone Weber of Saint Charles, MO for $1,988,593.30.

“Due to the widening of the bridge, they will keep two lanes of traffic open; however, the width will be restricted and then continue on with the lane closures occurring in the evenings. The evening lane closures will occur from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday,” explained MoDOT Area Engineer Erik Maninga.

During construction, which is expected to take up to three months, there will be no access to the median crossover John Creech Road, north of the Big Creek Bridge.  Also, the southbound turn lane at Dietrich Crossover, south of the Big Creek Bridge, will be closed. Motorists will need to us the US 61/Route U interchange to access these areas.

In the first stage of construction, the outside shoulder will be replaced, and two lanes of traffic will use the rest of the roadway.  However, these lanes will be restricted to 10’ 6”.  This work will be done during daytime hours.

A lowered speed limit of 40  mph will be in place in the work zone, and additional law enforcement will be patrolling the area as part of the contract.  “We expect there to be some impact to traffic during heavy commute times and just ask that drivers be patient, obey all the signs, and don’t be distracted while driving through the work zone for their safety, as well as our workers,” Maninga explained.

Message boards will be set out to alert motorists of the work zone.  Other information will be available through local media and online at www.modot.org/northeast.  Another way to stay informed about road work in Lincoln County is to subscribe to MoDOT’s free e-update and text alert service, also found online under the Travelers tab.
